Things at Mt Buller and Mt Sterling are up and running again, and everyone is eagerly awaiting the arrival of visitors.

"It's just a wonderful feeling to see people getting their cafes and stores back open; lots of happy faces up here on the mountain," says spokesperson Rhylla Morgan, adding that the tourists seem just as keen to come back.

"The phones, the messages and the emails have been absolutely melting down up here. I think there's a lot of appetite for people who want to get off the couch and get up into the mountains and I don't blame them."

But COVID-19 restrictions mean any visitors aged over 12 years old will require a COVID-19 test and receipt of a negative result, within 72 hours of coming. Ms Morgan says it just means a bit of extra planning is required.

"The extra step of requiring the COVID-19 test is obviously important for keeping everybody safe, but it does create an extra logistical challenge," she said.

"We've been fortunate that our local township of Mansfield is ramping up the testing facilities, because not only do visitors have to have a test, but our staff do as well."

But she says they're just focusing on the magnificent snow on the mountain right now, with more expected to come.

"We're really keen to get back on our feet, back on our skis and boards and make the most of the second half of the season. It's wonderful to have a metre of snow on the ground to enjoy, and we're going to make the most of it."
